Was over at his place for 4th of July celebrations, and he showed me the guns he inherited from his grandfather, with additional guns on the way. Unfortunately I didn’t get photos of his guns, but I’ll post some generic pics below:

Berdan II rifle; fires a big-ass 10.75x58r (.42 Berdan). His was missing the ram rod and bayonet, and the bolt was a little sticky but it was very neat. Ammunition is apparently very hard to find, being over 100 years old.

Stevens .22 Visible Load rifle in wall-hanger condition.

Just...what?

Burnside Carbine, which fired one of the oddest rounds I’ve ever seen, in .54 cal. It looked like it had a nickel finish, and was in very good condition. Ammunition for this is even scarcer than the Berdan, considering this was a Civil War weapon.

Looks more like a cigar than a cartridge

1873 Springfield Trapdoor Carbine; 45-70 Government. Also in good condition.

Kinja'd!!!

My favorite from his collection, a 1917 Artillery Luger in 9mm. It had a long almost 8" barrel, and was in very good condition as well.

I’m hoping we can get him to take the trapdoor and luger to the range soon, after he has them cleaned and inspected. A very neat treat to look at all these.

The trap door is a fun one to shoot. The load mechanism is just cool

Think that Springfield is a .45-70. Lots of people still shoot them, should be lots of fun. Matthew Quigley (Tom Selleck) fired a .45-110, which would be the same bullet with 50% more powder behind it (110 grains vs. 70).

Very cool. Love that visible load Stevens. One of my dad’s friend’s tipped me to a lever-action 10 Guage shotgun that might be in his Grandfather’s barn.

Update us with the rest when you can!

Lugers are cool, Got to see a buddies Luger from ww2. In a 9/10 condition with all the German markings and numbers matching. Have not got to shoot it yet as his dad wants to be there when we shoot it just in case something goes wrong with it.

My grandfather traded his Luger for a 1955 Gibson J50 acoustic back in about 1965. Interestingly enough, the values on both of them are still pretty much the same.

Just saw this, but very cool! Your BIL inherited some cool stuff. Especially that artillery Luger, those are gorgeous. A trapdoor carbine is also one of those guns that’s on my list to own someday. I love antique guns. I have an FFL 03 C&R so my safe is full of old military guns... Mosins, Mausers, Enfields, and my favorite are the old Swiss Schmidt & Rubin straight pull rifles.

As I recall you’re somewhere in the MD/DC area. Where do you go shoot? Public range or do you have some private land you can use?

What is the advantage of getting the C&R?

I haven’t had the pleasure of shooting at an outdoor range yet, but all of my trips are to Maryland Small Arms in Upper Marlboro, MD. They have 25yd pistols ranges and 50 yard rifle ranges. There’s usually a line 30 minutes before they open due to their popularity.

The C&R allows you to buy (and sell, to an extent) any firearms that are considered Curios or Relics without having to do a background check. And they can be shipped right to your door. To meet the C&R criteria a firearm has to be either 50 years old or older, or on the C&R register. And the 50 years old requirement is for the actual gun itself, not the model, so reproduction guns don’t count.

On the flip side you are required to keep an ATF approved registry of when you acquire and sell, or dispose of, your C&R guns. It’s not much hassle though, so its worth it. Also, the license designates you as a “Collector” so you’re more limited than what you could do with an FFL 01 or 07 (dealer or manufacturer). Basically, you can buy all the C&R guns you want. You can also sell them, even at a profit, provided you aren’t trying to make a living with it or skirt the laws in other ways. But you don’t get access to the NICS, so you aren’t considered a dealer and can’t conduct business.

The big reason to do it is, or was, you would get dealer pricing at places like Midway, Brownells, etc. even on non-C&R related items, since you were an FFL holder. At $35 for 3 years for the license, mine paid for itself on my first Brownells order. Unfortunately Midway did away with their discount, and Brownells drastically reduced theirs (and they now have hteir Edge program, which is like Amazon Prime for gun parts). Also a lot of C&R sources have dried up or been hampered by the gov’t so the market for them isn’t as good, but there still are some good things out there.

Also, if you’re willing to make the drive, I’d suggest checking out Cresap Rifle Club in Frederick, MD. It’s open to the public every Sunday from 10 to 3, has 10 and 25 yard pistol lanes and 50 and 100 yard rifle lanes. It’s $8 per person, and $1 per target you use. I’m a member there and coach their Junior Rifle Team.
